Biological Sex vs. Gender

Someone’s biological sex and gender can be the same (cisgender) or different (transgender).

The terms male and female are used to discuss the different biological bodies, but not all people identify with their assigned sex at birth.

Biological sex is assigned at birth and is based on genitals, chromosomes, and hormones.

  • Assigned male – born with a penis and testicles.
  • Assigned female – born with a vulva.
  • Assigned intersex – born with a combination of male and female genitals.

Biological sex is very different from gender.

Gender refers to what a society or culture says is masculine or feminine.

Sometimes a person’s biological sex and gender are the same, but sometimes they are different.
